Music as an art form.
What are people's opinions of music?is it a past time? a profession?
it's sad there's an abundance of crap on the markets these days..the media controls whats popular, (thats another story) and sometimes a touching song or something amazing comes out. it's stuff like this that make it worth waiting for....the blind loyalty to a particular band youd cop limitless crap for listening to...the enjoyment of listening to an album for the um-teenth time and still managing to notice something else in the music, hidden in the lyrics or as background sound...finding a track you can just fuckin relate to....the craft of a singer or group to make melodies that sound sweet to some ears tired of the same old shit on the radio....the lyrics that make u feel like youre there... it all makes music a wonderful thing. shame we have to wade our way through the commercialised hyped crap that basks in it's superficial glory and eventually making way for another sell-out track from a sell-out artist.
my theory is if you dont have a favourite artist and youve been listening to the same genre of music for more than a year you need to look at another style cos ur intrest is fading with trends, ur listening to the commercial shit.
what makes music special for you? tell us, i might know wat youre talkin about ;)

Music is the only real popular art. It's pop, even if it's nu metal. It's something that adresses to the masses. You don't have to "know" art to dig the music. It's out there... waiting for all of us. You can buy it cheap. you can download it for free [I don't, but anyway...]. You can see it live. It's accessible, easy to get. And it speaks about your life...
I like music because I have no choice.
I like music because it's always exciting, life-affirming, full of surprises, thrilling, sexy as fuck. When I'm djing, I go up and down, sing the lyrics, play the air guitar, making a fool of myself. But I don't mind... That's the only way for me... When they ask me "what drugs are you on?" I just answer "it's the music man!!! It lifts you up!!!". It does. All our lives are there, in songs. You are at your cosy little flat, and bu pressing a button you can open the door to talented people from around the globe who took drugs, studied music, tried to experiment in the studio, layed their broken heart in a melody, whatever... By pressing a button you can listen to techno music born in the warehouses of Detroit, rap musiv born in the african americans' ghettos, stoner rock born in the sunny beaches of the west coast, punk music born in london schools adn footbal fields 25 years ago, electronica born in the dancefloors...
I could go on for ages... Thing is, I cannot live without it. I am addicted to it. Totally. I still get the chills whenever I discover something new, whenever I get the chance to listen to something I understand can make music history or just change my life. And, in that way, music is like being in love - but the let downs are not that painful!!! So, there you have it - music is love. And the guy in High Fidelity actually exists. I know at least a dozen of'em...
:-)
indeed. i only tend to look for parallels ages after i hear the music....generally for me its more about the music than the lyrics but a good voice doesnt go astray :)
guy in hi fidelity? youve lost me there....im not that cultured....yet ;)
thanks for the comments, much appreciated.
High Fidelity is a great book from excellent Brit wirter Nick Hornby. It's all about a guy who owns a record store in London and makes lists of all his favourite and not so favourite things, like 5 jobs I would like to do, the 5 worst breaking-ups of my love-life etc.
Book is unbelievably realistic and funny. Robert De Niro bought the rights and brought it to the big screen. John Cusack got the part, and the action was transferred to Chicago. Not as great, but hilarious whatsoever. You should rent it
:-)
Hey dave, firstly I would liek to say that there are many genres of music that I do not like and don't "agree with" but as many of you will know music is my passion and such a HUGE HUGE part of my life, like I'm not saying it in a cliche way music means so much to me, so therefore when you talk about "mainstream" or "artificial crap" I cant say I agree. Yeah I find alot of stuff (eg britney spears and stuff) crap however I dont diss the people who listen to it, because you dissing people who listen to the "sell-out" music is like them dissing you for listening to qotsa......its exactly the same, they might not liek your music just as much as you might not like theirs. Anyway as for what makes music special to me is just indescribable. When I listen to the music I love I feel free. I get lost in the sounds of the instruments and the lyrics. Without music I would probably be nothing.....I love music to bits lol! But yeah its just .... the lyrics the music the whole concept and construction! hope that made sense ahah :)
yesm, does make sense 'Gooks. i dont mind copping crap for listening to QOTSA. as much as i dont like people saying "you listen to metal therefore you must be fucked in the head (or something to that extent) its partially true. there arent many people like me, whove gone through what i have.....etc. to make me individual, but back to the point.
my point about the sell-outs was that theyre not making music for the sake of music as an art, theyre exploiting it as a tool for their own profit - not as a profession. i say this cos if ppl such as (to pick a random example) J.Lo made REAL music yeh, she probably wouldnt be cruising round in a $$ Rolls Royce. simple as that.
As a point that branches off this music discussion, i dont think people that are solely lyricists ie singers only should be called musicians if they do not write theyre own lyrics. there are exceptions like if you have a fantastic voice - not Aus Idol fantastic, but real TALENT then maybe. what do you think?
fuck, and i keep calling transmitted glory gooks. sorry liz, youd have thought id learn by now...lol
matty i think you have a challenge. wait, no. fuck that.
what i meant by that tara was that, if you listen to say one genre or wider type such as you may get on a commercial radio station ie triple m - cock rock like cold chisel and creed/b105 - pop + hip hop like christina agulera and 50 cent etc AND still havent got a favourite artist then youre intrests are fading with trends, you obviously arent listening to the right music cos you cant find something you like enough to call youre favourite. i can understand people like liz whos faves change from time to time, but she's right into music - not for the trendy shit - but for MUSIC. if that makes sense to you.
